The Albert Schweizer School in Wiesbaden, Germany, designed by AFF architekten, is a two-story educational facility completed in 2021 with a built-up area of 5,737 m². Located within a 1970s residential district of Mainz-Kostheim, the project responds to the heterogeneous, small-scale settlement pattern of its context. Rather than adopting a monolithic block, the architects created a composition of three staggered building volumes that break down the school’s scale while generating a variety of exterior spaces. These open zones—ranging from quiet relaxation courtyards to active sports areas—are directly tied to the pedagogical vision of integrating learning, play, and community life.
The architectural language emphasizes durability and clarity, with robust materials such as concrete paired with generous openings for daylight and views. Thoughtful landscaping by Polymorph Design Studio integrates green outdoor spaces with circulation, fostering a strong indoor-outdoor relationship.
